This essay examines the caste dynamics of the rise of Hindutva. Contrary to the widespread assumption that middle caste politics in India is opposed to Hindutva, it argues that the two phenomena have been remarkable amenable and indeed, that the rise of Hindutva cannot be explained without this dynamic.
