The election of Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, concluded this May, has been hailed as historic, and so it is, though not for the reasons usually given. Its real significance is that it was backed, and bankrolled, by the Indian capitalist class to an extent, and with a unity and enthusiasm, unprecedented in history .
